Brief history of Manchester

Manchester began expanding in the 19th century because of the textile manufacturing during the industrial revolution.  In the 20th century there was a decline of importance to industrial industry. So Manchester rebranded themselves to a post industrial city, with multiple sporting, broadcasting and educational institutes.
Important events:
-The first newspaper to be printed in Manchester (1719)              
-First cotton exchange is built (1729)
-The first theater is built here (1753)
-The Manchester Guardian is founded by John Edward (1821)
-The Liverpool and Manchester railway is built, the first purpose built passenger railway (1830)
-The first telephone in regular use in the UK is installed (1878)
-Marks and Spencer opens its first store (1894)
-Rolls Royce is launched (1904)
-The BBC begins regular radio broadcasts from Manchester (1922)
-Manchester raids, kills 363, and injures 1183 (1940)
-The mark 1 is operable (1949)
-Cotton trading at the Royal Exchange stops (1968)
-BBC Radio Manchester opens as local radio (1970)
-A Provisional Irish Republican Army bomb explodes (1973)
